I don’t have a lot of time to write today, but I do want to share photos from my amazing trip to my friend Jani’s to help out at the Nash Island sheep shearing this past weekend. I felt very honored to be invited to this truly special weekend. What a treat to see the beginning of the process of creating the yarn we love so much. The team who tend this flock care deeply about what they are doing, and it shows in Jani’s finished yarn.
Rubber boots, necessary footwear when shearing on an island.
The shore of the island where the sheep live.
Getting organized for the roundup next to the only building on Nash Island.
The sheep rounded up and ready for shearing.
A pen full of lambs, waiting for their mamas.
More lambs waiting for their mamas, because you know, lambs.
Bags of fleeces skirted and sorted. They’ll go through more skirting at the mill.
Rams on the island where they will spend the summer.
The skirting table. This is where I spent most of the day. Our job was to quickly pick out unwanted bits and pieces from the fleece.
A lonely lamb waiting for his mama. They were reunited shortly after I snapped this shot.
Tired and happy, we waited on the dock with 7 bags of freshly clipped fleece. That’s Jani right behind me, followed by Sarah of Fiber Trek (wearing her Rivington Cowl), and Gale Zucker in her lovely Stopover.
Singles on spools at Jani’s mill.
Prepped fiber.
A yummy fleece.
Taking the rams to the boat.
