Cladonia Shawl

April 27, 2011 by Kirsten 12 Comments

Thank you for all of your kind birthday wishes and your enthusiastic support of my birthday/bloggiversary sale. The sale ended on Sunday the 24th, the 5th anniversary of Through the Loops. It's hard to believe that it's been 5 years already.

As promised with the teaser photo in my last post, I'm introducing my new pattern Cladoina.

Cladonia Collage
Cladonia is a semicircular shawl pattern worked in stockinette with a delicate lace border. This shawl was born because I am too weak to choose only one color from the outstanding range available in Tosh Merino Light.

For the first iteration of Cladonia I worked the stockinette body in a two color stripe and finished it with a solid border and a contrasting looped edging. The second time around I dug through my stash for a hank of merino/silk fingering weight yarn that I kettle dyed years ago. I've been waiting for the right project for this decadently soft yarn. Drapey neck-wear seemed just the thing. The only challenge will be prying it off of Sofie's neck.

The pattern contains both charted and written instructions for the lace border. It is worked in one piece from the top edge, increasing in size to the bottom looped edging.

You can see lots more photos on my , on Ravelry or on , Karen & Julie.

Off to pack now for the Loopy Ewe Spring Fling. I'll be teaching two classes – Triangular Shawl Design and Colorwork. If you're going be sure to say 'hello'.

Mittens for Spring?

April 8, 2011 by Kirsten 11 Comments

I originally created these stranded mittens for a swap with Ann. I am always awed by Ann's exceptional color work and was more than a bit intimidated to be making a stranded project for her. Her wonderful sense of color and pattern were the inspiration for this design.

Kanagawa Mittens 1
I wrote the pattern for the mittens, but was a little uncertain about when to publish. It is April after all. Does anyone want to knit mittens at this time of year? Several Flickr friends assured me that they like small projects in the warmer months and encouraged me to publish now rather than wait for the fall.

So here they are, the Kanagawa Mittens (ravelry link).

I used 5 colors of Cascade 220 Sport. This yarn is a great choice for colorwork. The selection of colors is extensive and the price is low enough that you won't blow the budget buying a fun range of colors. This would also be a great project for stash diving. I can see these mittens worked in anywhere from 2 to 10 or more colors. (If you make them in 10 or more colors please let me know! I'd love to see them!!)
