Andokides Jacket

February 21, 2011 by Kirsten 24 Comments

Banner

My newest pattern, the Andokides Jacket, is named for the painter from Ancient Greece who is credited with the invention of the red-figure pottery style.

A few months ago IJK and I went to the Metropolitan Museum of Art so she could do research for her IB extended essay. Going to an art museum with Izzy is always a joy. She is truly in her element when she is surrounded by art, and if it's ancient art – even better. On this day we spent most of our time in the Greek and Roman Galleries. Although the research she was doing was focused on Ancient Greek sculpture, I couldn't tear myself away from the red figure and black figure pottery. I had a colorwork jacket in mind, but couldn't quite settle on a design for the colorwork sections. When I saw the delicate embellishments on the Greek pottery I knew I'd found my inspiration.

Andokides 3

The Andokides Jacket is worked from the bottom up, in the round. The sleeves are worked separately and joined to the body at the yoke. The front edges are steeked and garter stitch front bands are added. Don't fear steeks. Most of my test knitters hadn't steeked before and several reported that the steeks were fun and not nearly as difficult as they'd thought. I give instructions for steeking in the pattern and there are also many excellent on-line tutorials.

I used Cascade 218 Superwash for my version of this design. It's a great choice for the price and it comes in a wonderful range of colors. Test knitter Linda used Quince & Co. Osprey. I love the colors she used. Knit Picks also offers several yarns in appropriate weights.

North Jersey Yarn Crawl

February 16, 2011 by Kirsten 3 Comments

If you live in the area and are free this weekend, come on out to the Northern Jersey Yarn Crawl.

On Sunday I'll be hanging out at my friend Justine's store, Angelfire Studios. I'll have samples of my designs and would be happy to suggest yarns at Angelfire that will work well with them. Stop by to say "hi' and check out the gorgeous selection of yarns that Justine carries in her store.

I'm hoping to head over to Angelfire on Saturday too. Courtney Kelley and Kate Gagnon Osborn from Kelbourne Woolens will be there signing copies of their new book Vintage Modern Knits. The designs in this book are fantastic. I'm looking forward to picking up a copy this weekend.

Hope to see you this weekend!

And since I'm not one to have a photo-less post, here's a sneak peek at a new design that will be available early next week.

De-Stash

February 15, 2011 by Kirsten 1 Comment

ETA: Thanks for your interest. All of the yarn has been claimed. Keep an eye on this spot. I'll be offering more soon.

I love my stash. I really do. When I pull it all out to admire I fall for each skein all over again. There is so much potential in each those little balls of wool or cotton or bamboo or silk or cashmere or whathaveyou.

The problem is when I design I try to use only yarns and colorways that are currently available. I know knitters who make my patterns are much happier when I do. I'm not always successful, but I do try. Honest.

So it is time to destash some well loved yarn that I know I will never use.

If you see something you'd like, send an email to throughtheloops at gmail dot com. First come, first severed. If payment is not made in 24 hours I will offer the yarn to the next person on the list.

  1. Put "DESTASH" in the subject line.
  2. The prices below do not include shipping, so include your mailing address so that I can calculate shipping. I will choose the least expensive option to your zip code via USPS.
  3. Include the email address you use for PAYPAL. I will send you a bill through PAYPAL. Please pay within 24 hours or I will offer the yarn to someone else.
  4. I have priced these yarns very well. Please don't try to negotiate.
  5. These yarns are only availble in the lots as shown. I will not break up the lots. Several of them are sweater quantities.
  6. As you can see from the photos some of the balls of yarn are a little untidy. They are not knotted, but I would be happy to wind them into yarn cakes for you if you'd prefer. Just be sure to let me know in your email if you'd like that done.

My home is pet-free & smoke free.

I have tried very hard to accurately represtent the colors. However please note that monitors do vary.

I have linked each of these yarns to the yarn page on Ravely if you'd like more information and to get ideas for projects.

Clepsydra Hat – and an ebook

February 10, 2011 by Kirsten 5 Comments

Clepsydra Hat & Mittens 2

For a long time I've wanted to make a hat to wear with my Clepsydra mittens, but I just didn't have enough of the yarn that I originally designed the mittens with. Back in December I finally took the time to order yarn to remake the mittens  along with enough for the matching hat. I've been all about the neutrals lately so I chose Berroco Ultra Alpaca in Steal Cut Oats with Winter White for the contrast trim.

Clepsydra Hat
As with the mittens the hat starts with a cabled icord brim. Stitches are picked up around the icord, then the hat is worked in a twisted cable to the crown. The alpaca yarn makes it extra warm and Berroco offers such an exquisite range of colors in their Ultra Alpaca line that you may be compelled to make more than one set. After seeing Margene's orange Clepsydra mittens recently I've been dreaming of a set in that color of my own.

This pattern contains both charts and written instructions for the twisted cable stitch pattern. At the suggestion of my good friend and test knitter extraodinairre, Karen, I color coded the cables on the charts to make them easier to read. Thank you Karen.
