You May Think At First I’m As Mad As A Hatter. . .

November 28, 2006 by Kirsten 29 Comments

I’ve knit a hat a day since Friday.  I can’t stop!  I’m finding them the perfect place to experiment with color and patterning.   I have piles of single balls of yarn, so this could go on and on. . . I’m casting on another one as I upload the photos.  Four out of 5 of these were done by making a basic 96 stitch hat and adding stitch patterns that I dreamed up or found in books.  My favorite is the last one, but maybe that’s because it is freshly off my needles.  The yarns I used are a combination of Cascade 220, Patons Classic Merino and Elann Peruvian Highland Wool.  The hat with the rolled brim is Lorna’s Laces Bullfrogs and Butterflies and Araucania Nature Wool Bulky.
These will all go to the Dulaan Project.

Red Scarf

November 26, 2006 by Kirsten 28 Comments

Thanksgiving weekend allowed me quite a bit of knitting time and it has been exclusively Knitting Unto Others.  I finished my Red Scarf Project scarf a few days ago.  Today I finally got around to offering the bribes involved in getting the photo shoot done.  I have mentioned before that it usually takes offers of chocolate to get the Lad to model.  So for the price of a few Toblerones I present my Red Scarf.  Pardon the sullen posture, he has been sick all weekend.

Specs.
Pattern:  My own.  The pattern is now available on Ravelry.
Yarn:  Cascade 220, two colors, one hank each
Needles: US 7 Knitpicks Options
Finished Measurements: Approximately 6″x63″
Lad:  Fifteen-year-old-funky-bass-playing-son

Notes:  A pre-blocking photo can be seen here.  It had a puzzle piece look that I really liked.  I needed to block it to get the length required for the Red Scarf Project.  I still like it.  It’s just a different look.  In the comments of the same post, my Sockret Pal suggested that it would make an “awesome afghan”.  I couldn’t agree more!  It would be such a great vehicle to play with color, much like a quilt.  When I write up the pattern, I also plan to include instructions on how to make it into an afghan.

Added later:  The free pattern is now on Ravelry.  As always with my patterns, please let me know if you find any errors so that I may correct the pattern.  I would love to see your photos if you chose to make the scarf.  I will put them in my reader gallery album.  Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or comments.  Enjoy.

More Dulaan hats coming soon.  I’ve got 3 done already.

Of Knitting for Dulaan, and Why Ninety Six is a Magical Number

November 24, 2006 by Kirsten 11 Comments

Hat_1

I had an epiphany today.  It occurred to me what a useful number 96 is for knitting hats.  Some of you may already realize this and be saying to yourselves, "Yea, big deal, that’s obvious".  But it took me until this morning.  You see, 96 divides evenly into so many numbers; 2,3,4,6,8,12,16,24,32&48.  Imagine the possibilities for stitch patterns, fair isle & lace. Best of all it works out nicely for knitting hats at a worsted gauge.  This hat fits my 7 year old nephew, and my 40 something year old sister.  If there was a perfect knitting number this would be it.  Ninety six would work out pretty well for the front or back of a sweater in my size too.   So many ideas swirling around.  Another Dulaan hat has already been cast on.

Gotta go.  DH is calling me to go out to dinner.  No leftover turkey for me tonight.

My Sockret Pal has struck again!  This time she sent a lovely shawl pin from Designs by Romi.  Scout is selling them over at Scouts Swag.  It is very elegant and simple – exactly what I would have chosen for myself!  Now perhaps I’ll be able to keep my shawls from slipping off my shoulders!

Knit Unto Others
is in full swing.  I’ve been working on my contribution for the Red Scarf Project.  I’m using Cascade 220 and switching between red and a heathery wheat shade.  I’m enjoying the way the pattern looks as if it connects like puzzle pieces at the color changes.  I hope to get some time to knit a couple of hats for Dulaan as well before I get back to all of the holiday knitting.
